Doings of Learned Stupidities

(Eruditarum Stultitiarum Acta) We've been doing this for more than five years, but we lost the first year or so of archives. Frightening...

Serenity

It's been a good couple of weeks for the Caelius Spinator Film Series on Getting Out of the House. Last week, I saw Proof with its fine performances by Paltrow and Hopkins and passable work by Jake G. Ian did a good job too...

But last night, I laughed, I cried, and I occasionally was entirely disgusted by human nature. Yes, I must have seen a Joss Whedon film. But wait, there's only one of them. Well, I am very familiar with his TV work, much of which transitions very well to the big screen. Television writers often have to figure out much more about plot and character development than movie writers. People really don't tune in for big explosions week after week. Hence, Joss has written and directed a space opera that works. Admittedly, he had a difficult job. He also was adapting his space western, Firefly , at the same time. But there are enough efficient and clever flashbacks to fill you in on the basics and enough easter eggs to entertain folks who were addicted to their Firefly DVD. Go see it. And if you're the kind of person who likes deep philosophical themes, they're hiding there, too, in the midst of a palpably material world.
