Coalition of the Willing
First, I just thought that this was a rhetorical term for the US-led coalition against Iraq (forty countries and counting according to the Pentagon). Just today, I heard it out of the mouth of both Ari Fleischer and George Pataki. It's official. Saddam Hussein's worst enemy is now the Coalition of the Willing. Hence, I have been in search of key information about this Coalition.
What is the Coalition of the Willing?: The US-led international coalition of military forces and moral supporters of the continuation of the Gulf War against Iraq.
Who are its leaders?: George W. Bush (For sure), Tony Blair (Almost certainly), and maybe Aznar (Prime Minister of Spain). Silvio Berlusconi (?)
Does it have any legal status?: Not really. At best, it's a simple society, like the UN. At worst, it's just a particular trick of nomenclature.
Doesn't it have an eerie name?: You bet. It sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it.
Where does its name come from?: President Bush indicated that such a coalition would be formed during comments he made during the 2002 Nato Summit on 20 November 2002 at a press conference with Czech President Vaclav Havel.
From CNN
"It's very important for our [NATO] nations as well as all free nations to work collectively to see to it that Saddam Hussein disarms," Bush said.
"However, should he choose not to disarm, the United States will lead a coalition of the willing [Emphasis added] to disarm him and at that point in time, all our nations ... will be able choose whether or not they want to participate."
