Nivescit, Semper Nivescit

Yes, it does seem always to be snowing around Chicago these days. Today, the air is cold that the snow grains are extremely fine. They often appear so fine that a scientist ignorant of the use of rock salt might be forgiven if he or she suspected from soil tests that the atmosphere over this city was enriched in salt.

Beer's Law, Who Knew?

We've been talking about radiative transfer theory in climate lately. At one point, my professor mentions that one result is called Beer's Law, something I first learned in 11th grade chemistry in order to do a spectroscopy research project. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it had other uses than for analyzing the concentrations of chemical compounds in solution.
